“customary marriage” means a marriage celebrated according to
the rites, practices and customs of an African community to
which one or both of the parties belong;
“district” means a marriage district constituted under section 4;
“District Registrar” means an officer appointed under section 5(1),
to perform functions relating to marriage under this Act;
“domicile” means a permanent home where one has decided to
stay and has no intentions of leaving in the near future;
“family” means a husband and wife, including their children;
“Hindu” means a person who is a Hindu by religion in any form,
including a Virashaiva, a Lingayat and a follower of the
Brahmo, Prarthana or Arya Samaj, or a person who is a
Buddhist of Indian origin, a Jain or a Sikh by religion;
“irretrievable breakdown of marriage” means a situation where the
petitioner proves to the court that he or she can no longer live
together with his or her spouse as husband or wife;
“judicial separation” means the separation of a husband and wife
by court decree;
“Local Spiritual Assembly’’ means the local governing council
of the Bahai Faith and in this Act, the authority responsible
for solemnizing Bahai marriages;
“marriage” means the union between a man and a woman for life or
until it is dissolved in the manner accepted by that form of
marriage; and which is recognised under the laws of Uganda;
“marriage gift” means a gift, by whatever name known, in cash
or in kind given by either party to a marriage in respect of
that marriage and includes bride price and bride wealth;
