The Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Project

Extension of the African Human Rights Case Law Analyzer

The SGBV database aims to provide a free-to-access online analytical resource of legal materials specifically dealing with SGBV and contribute to existing efforts in curbing SGBV by promoting the accessibility, usage and effectiveness of legal materials and structures for accessing remedies where they exist.

Pilot Program

These six countries are selected as pilot target countries because they either have an on-going conflict, or recently emerged from conflict which creates a situation where crime and violence thrive and go undetected - especially SGBV.

Functions of the SGBV Database

The online database will serve to publicize and increase the accessibility and usage of available legal frameworks by victims of SGBV to secure remedies.

It identifies and puts together in English and French relevant international instruments and domestic legislations and case law on SGBV.

It highlights primary case law so the uninitiated user easily finds relevant information.

Searches have been filtered to various facets such as country, type of decision and a wide range of keywords to simply the search.

It allows researchers/users to simultaneously read a decision and the text of national and international instruments cited in it by providing clickable links in the texts.

Project Funders

The initial phase of this project was funded by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (MacArthur Foundation) from 2013 to 2016.

Thanks to the success of the initial phase, IHRDA later obtained funding from National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) and United States Institute of Peace (USIP), which enabled us to include a few other countries.

IHRDA continues sourcing for funding to include more countries and information to the database, as the intention is to cover all countries in Africa.
